How do you go about finding what students do well?

I'm going to go with the obvious -- Give them tests.

I am not sure what you mean, academically or otherwise.

The first days of class I usually hand out a information sheet with all sorts of questions about the students. This way I get a head start on all their hobbies and interests. I also send a letter home asking for the same type stuff from their parents.

As for the academic side. Our district has started making short assessement type questions to be given before teaching something. Then you collect and look at what students know and don't know so that you can adjust your teaching accordingly.

give them different activities and see what ones they enjoy doing the most and the ones they score best on and get the most enthusiastic about.
