If Fed Ex retires or would be past his prime already; may in two or three years, but by then, Rafael Nadal would face stiff competition from other talented young players such as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Richard Gasquet, Tomas Berdych, among others.
But if ever Rafa gets to the top spot, I don't think it would be for long. He doesn't have the complete game like Roger has. He dominates in clay but French Open is only one of the four GS. He so far has reach only one final in a surface other than clay(Wimbledon 06) where he was beaten by Roger.
So he will NEVER really be as great as Roger. He will be someone like Gustavo Kuerten who reached number one spot on the strength of French Open wins.
Ergo, STOP COMPARING THE MIGHTY ROGER to Rafael Nadal cause they're not on the same league!

I think it will take a major effort for Nadal to knock Federer off No. 1 spot. Nadal can only play well on clay, while Federer can play on various grounds. If Federer beats Nadal @ the French Open, there will be no doubt that Nadal won't be No. 1 unless Federer retire, which won't happen anytime soon.

I think so. He's only 20. Roger is now 25 and he didn't even get to #1 until he was late 22 to early 23 years of age. It won't be long until Nadal will just pick on every sides of his game. Roger will eventually run out of steam and everyone like Nadal who is younger than him will eventually start to beat him...Roger did it to Pete Sampras....he will face the same end.

In my opinion, i don`t think he will reach number 1. By the time Federer retires i think Nadal will be burnt out. I can see Nadal being another Hewitt - their best days when they are young and when they are older their level falls.

Nadal is more likely to burn out before Federer because of his style of play. Clay courters historically have not dominated for long periods of time, while grass courters can build dynasties.

Nadal will never get the number one as long as Fed is still playing. But I think Fed will retire at number one so hopefully it won't be long!

Yes... he will... eventually... he is much younger than federer... he has a lot more to learn. If federer is at his peak now,he'll eventually lose it.. and then it could be nadal's turn.
