There are pro's and con's for this. Often seeing other answers lets me know that I don't really have anything new to add, so saves me and others the time from writing and reading my stuff.
Sometimes seeing other answers triggers something within me too, so it does help me create better advice for the questioner. Overall, I guess it's a good thing that we can see other answers.

I hear where your coming from, but I doubt if yahoo will change that function.
I think ukboyinu, gave the best answer. I read it after I gave mine, and I feel he has a good point too. See there are pros and cons to this and many questions on Y/A.

I like it too... If there are several saying what I want to say, I don't usually bother as I'm not a points monger!
If you don't have anything to add, don't bother...
What irritates the heck out of me is when people post answers like "i don't know" to valid questions for the sole purpose of getting points.. I think an asker should be able to forward these to customer service and if they are truly useless, have the person's points taken away... with maybe a penalty for being annoying... just like when you report a violation of COC.

Yes, sometimes I just want to see what other people think. I don't necessarily want to answer every question that I open. I sometimes just need food for thought.

Of course! Who wants to read the same answer 15 times. This way, not so many duplicates.

Try this - read the answers after you punch in your answer. Often, I do not answer but read the answers to gain knowledge.

It used to irritate me at first, too.
But now, I think it helps to give a more unbiased answer & for the questioner to hear a true answer from you.

Why not?
Sometimes someone makes a point and you have something to add to it, too.
