I've running on (x4) 512 (3200) sticks of Ram now buy my board will not allow me to run them at speed 400. They are made to run all 400 speed(Patriot brand) but my mobo won't run them that fast in all slots. I've tried trading slots & changing memory settings in the bios received from the manufacturer, but still no luck to run all of them at 400. I can however run 2 of them Dual channel 400 in 2 slots. They are only running at 333 in all 4. Any ideas?

are you sure they all are 400mhz?....ideally all ram chips should be identicle. if they are not identicle even though they are made by the same company they can still have problems at full speed. you could try updating your Bios (be extremely careful doing this) sometimes a bios update can fix it. maybe one chip is faulty. try each ram chip with 2 others at 400mhz. failing that buy 2 1GB chips and put them together in one pair of slots and then put the 2 512MB chips that do run at 400mhz in the other pair of slots, then ebay the 2 that dont run at 400mhz to offset some of the cost. WinXP with 3GB of ram screams with speed.

just run the 4 stick at 333.
that gives you a gig more power than 2 x512
unless your cpu is running at a fsb above 166 there is little point in running your memory at 200 anyway.
the more memory power will far outway any gain you may get by running your memory at 400
try running 2 sticks at 333 and do a pc mark or memeory test of some form then do it again with it in dual channel at 400 and compare the results.

If you are correct in that they can all run at 400mhz, then your BIOS should allow you to force them to run at 400. You should also know that you may be running your memory at 666, not 400. Some BIOS'es show dual channel as running at 200mhz, with the "dual channel" hidden away elsewhere.

If you are sure that yours is reflecting 400mhz, then you will need to force the settings. e.g. set the RAS, CAS, voltage, etc. in the BIOS. To obtain the correct settings, you will probably need to contact Patriot support. Some settings may need specially tweaked because the motherboard may have trouble dealing with different latency times in the memory.

The answer is simple.

When you have compatible RAM that are rated at different speeds (i.e. 333 & 400) the RAM will ALWAYS run at the speed of the lower rated sticks.

In your case your RAM will only run at 333 as long as you have those sticks in the mix. If you were to put in four 400's then you'll get your RAM to run at 400.

There is no way to "overclock" ram. It's preset by design of the chips, and is not variable in any way.

Hope this helps.

in all probability. in the beginning you may desire to make helpful your 2 stick of 512 are in the suited slots, frequently the two closest to the processor. some motherboards (Asus) will run in twin channel mode with that configuration. yet its no longer the terrific thank you to do it. blending RAM sizes and varieties in specific situations reasons overall performance subject concerns. you would be extra valuable off with 4 sticks of 512 or 2 sticks of a million gig.
