Why are geese afraid of swans?

Since Geese are significantly smaller than Swans they better stay out of their way.

Additional comment: Coyote and byderule, I don't see how a swan can break an adult arm and leg. An average swan weights about 20-25 pounds and a really large one would be about 30 pounds.

Same reason I am more afraid of Swans than Geese,

An angry Swan is no joke ,they can break your leg if their wing hits you the right way
Geese cannot do that

i was once on a lake in a boat and we had to beat a Swan of with the paddles as it was trying to attack us ,

A swan could kill a Goose easily.

Well for one swans are far larger and much stronger. It does not seem like they would be but the strength behind some of the white swan species (mute, trumpet) is insane. One brush of the wings can cause major brusing and I knew a guy who even had his arm broken by one.

More than anything though it is just swans play a dominate roll when the two species are together. Kinda like how lions and cheetahs are.

Swans are known to kill geese to take control of an area, but more so they are known to go after and kill goslings left and right.

They compete for the same territories for nesting and feeding. Since swans are larger, they can typically drive off geese. This is a problem in areas that swans are introduced because the look pretty, as they drive the native water fowl out of their nesting territories. I have heard accounts of swans killing geese in fights over territory.

Same reason dogs and just about everything else is afraid of swans. They are big, powerful, aggressive, nasty-tempered birds.
