Can I do it myself or do I need to take it to a service station?

yes you can do it
but dont do it without gauges for high and low side
otherwise you wont know how much is in it
it will cost you less to bring it in to a shop that charges you $20 to $30 + freon (r134)
the gauge set is $75 to $150
its not advised to only use a low side gauge only

Yes you can recharge it.
Go to a discount auto parts store and they now have a kit with everything you need and most of the kits have either a CD or very detailed instructions for a do it yourselfer as yourself
Note: You may have another problem if it has completely leaked down and that takes special equipment to check.
If the charge doesn't hold ask around for a good mechanic and take it in.
