Two nites ago it made some clicking noises inside the dash after starting and the gauge lights and dash lights went on/off/on/off 4 times. In the morning the guage lights were all on as if the key was still in it. Disconnected the battery for a few minutes and it seemed to go back to normal - but only for one start. Can remotely unlock/lock doors, but cannot set off alarm. Got new battery and when I put the key in, turned to on and sat back - it started on it's own. While driving it makes clicking noises (a bit louder than turn signal, and a little faster) and the dash lights go on/off/on/off. This also gets interupted when I step on the brake. A friend suggested I have the alarm looked at or even disconnected if too exensive to fix. The fuses under the hood all look OK, but I could not locate the fuse box that's supposed to be under the left side of the dash per owner's manual. Long answers or large files Ok to send to my email.

I got it used, but as far as I know, it has no remote start. What should I look for?

Yeah... I'd have to go with KaeZoo. That sounds like a cr@ppy remote start installation. Those things are always hooked up to the vehicle's lights through the parking light relay. This same relay of course drives your interior gauge lights. That relay is what is making the clicking noise. That truck no doubt has Ford's passlock security, and it scares me to think how they wired the bypass for it. They are also hooked up to the brake switch to prevent someone from driving off with your car while it's remote started. You should probably have someone remove the aftermarket remote starter or you'll end up stranded or on fire.

EDIT: The alarm probably had RS included. The easiest components to see with a properly installed RS system would be the brake switch wire or the pin switch under the hood. The control box would probably be hidden under the dash or behind the knee bolster somewhere. See if there is a second wire clipped onto the wire coming from the brake switch (at top of brake pedal) or a pin switch under the front of the hood. You could ground the pin switch wire and it SHOULD disable the system.

On my truck, I cut the wire that came down from the ignition feed. It also disabled the headlights on warning. Next time I would just unplug the little box. I followed the sound, it was under the steering column, a black box a couple inches square.

Electrical problems are difficult to figure out. It's best to take your Explorer to a Ford dealership. It's possible that other Explorer owners have experienced the same problem, so the fix will be easy and less expensive than having a private mechanic try and figure it out.

Do you have an after-market remote start installed in the vehicle? It sounds very much as if that's where the problem lies.

You should take the car to the dealer and have them diagnose the problem They are going to plug the vehicle to the computer that is going to diagnose the problem. It sounds like a computer, electrical problem.
