I think the sentiment, if not the exact words, is generally true. Which is why it's so important to be very, very careful before we send our troops overseas and start trampling on the human rights of others. In a global world, where the U.S. is in the extreme minority, it's equally important that we consult and stand with our allies, and that we choose such allies carefully. Lest we forget, Iraq was our "ally" even as he was slaughtering entire villages in the 80's, and both the Saudi's and Egypt have known ties to terrorism, and spotty human rights records, yet we consider them to be our allies today.

Our nation is currently fractured not because of those that refuse to blindly follow, but because of those that refuse to learn their history lessons, and try to form a consensus based on heresy and false intelligence. If we live in a nation where we're obligated to turn a blind eye to lies and human rights abuse, for the sake of "unity", then we're not a free nation and we deserve to fall.

If any house is ,in this case an army being divided or a nation divided , then it will collapse .Of all the presidents we had in human history, there was no one who quoted the Bible more than Abraham Lincoln who did not have a religious denomination or official church affiliation. Kinda wants to make you go hmmm? If a house is divided , then only bad things can be expected. It would be like the man who built his house on sand and when the wind blew it was rocked off its foundations. But in union, the house was built on a solid rock foundation that can withstand even the stiffest wind of division and secession (Mt. 7:24-27et alia)

It is true! As for his insight, I believe that the War between the States , better known as the Civil War were of great concern to Lincoln. That the Union was fragmented, brought Lincoln enormous pain and he knew that what was at stake was more than "slavery".He was not about to watch the Union which had cost so many lives to create broken into two parts . with brother agings brother etc. I think that his own beliefs and thoughts helped him to to create that simple statement which spoke volumes.

I believe Lincoln actually said " A house divided against itself cannot stand" which basically has the same meaning. The quote you mentioned was first used in one of Aesop's Fables. Lincoln was an avid reader, including Aesop, so I'm sure what he read had a lasting impression on him.

Actually it wasn't true. He made that speech before the secession of the southern states trying to convince them not to do so. He felt that if the US broke into 2 (or more) smaller countries a European power would step in. As it was, the Southern states did break away but the US did not dissolve.

He was a student of world and US history.

It is an allusion to the Bible where Jesus is referencing the two kingdoms and how a leader who attacks his own, is detined to fall.

It is common sense.

Others may recognize this logic, but deny it for fear of reprisal and losing votes or friends.
