Not sure where you live but Verizon seems to have the best coverage coast to coast and the best reception. But they are more expensive and not as flexible as some of the others. I hear T-Mobile lately is really good coverage and very few dropped calls and their plans are more reasonably priced. I have Cingular and although they have good coverage nationwide, lately they have so many dropped calls, it's getting kinda frustrating.
You can compare the different phone plans at the following link and even get a very cool FREE phone with a new service plan from any of the major carriers. Compare them all at the website below:

t-mobile and verison are very good. Keep in mind, though that the cell phones are only as good as the closest tower. If you are in the boonies were very few towers have been set up, then you are likely to have very poor service nor none at all.
It may be wise to ask the clerk who is knowledgeable with the phones and their service where a particular cell provider has its "help" headquarters" This may be very important information for when you need some on line help....some of these companies have "out of the continent" call numbers...if you know what I mean...very hard to understand some of these people on the other side of the line.

verizon's service is awesome, but their plans are the priciest. Sprint and alltell have really good plans, but they drop a lot.
