Two great players, both with careers interrupted -- Lou by ALS, and Joe by WWII. Looking head-to-head at the career numbers:
Lou gets the nod in batting average (.340 - .325), slugging average (.632 - .579), at bats per homer run (16.2 - 18.9) and RBIs per at bat (.25 - .23).

Both players are from different eras, but all things considered I'd take Lou Gehrig.

Guess you want to know who is best.
Two different positions. Two different eras of the team history.
One had such a sorry stroke of bad luck.
they were both great.
Edge to DiMaggio, more abilities to steal and catapult the team. The long hitting streak. Do not get me wrong Lou Gherig also great, but if the coin flipped. would go to DiMaggio.

You gotta take The Iron Horse.

Joe DiMaggio had a great career, but because of the War we will never know what a full career for Joe may have done for his stats.

Both were Great players...but you have to take Lou.

A great centerfielder is harder to find than a great first baseman. So on defense, DiMaggio.

Offensively, Gehrig simply tramples DiMaggio; Lou's bat can hold its own against just about anybody in history.

Close call. If my team plays in a big park I want the glove in CF; if it's a low-offense era, I want the bigger bat. Take Gehrig in general, hitters of his caliber are always rare.

Lou Gehrig did phenomenal things even with his career cut short. Had it not been, the record books would look a lot different today.

I consider the Iron Horse to be the best player in the history of baseball. the numbers he would have put up had he been able to finish his career would have been huge. He also was an very good clutch hitter. He hit lots of homers in the world series.

well, Lou had his own disease named after him, and he probably has the most memorable moment ever by a player at Yankee Stadium....but I am gonna give the edge to Joe D...two words....Marilyn Monroe. who cares about baseball stats.....the guy dropped the hammer on the hottest babe of the day and maybe ever....edge to Joe

The Iron Horse or the Yankee Clipper? Hard to compare them because they were both great at their positions.
