What are the "real" economics of ethanol vs. gasoline? I mean considering all the costs,MPG, distribribution

Consider all costs such distribution, MPG, emissions, higher food costs due to increased demand in corn products, etc.

I have heard that it takes more energy to produce ethanol than you get out of it--even watering the corn requires energy, harvesting it, processing it. I can't cite a source I would call reliable on that, but its an interesting perspective if true.
