I have a 1990 Honda Civic Hatchback. A few days ago, the left directional started blinking twice as fast as it used to. The right directional is unaffected. What could be the cause? Is there something I should do about it?

The light bulbs in the front and back do work, and they do blink as fast as the directional on the dashboard does.

as far as i know, there wasn't a way on 90's cars for them to sense when a bulb will or is about to go bad. Maybe on the higher end luxury vehicles - acura, infinity, porsche, etc., but not on a civic.

a fast blinking signal or one that comes on & doesn't blink means that a bulb is out.

however, if both your front & rear bulbs are blinking & flashing the same rate as the blinker on the dash, it could mean something has gone wrong with your turn signal relay. Not that it isn't working though.

to prove this theory right or wrong, go buy 2 new turn signal bulbs (about $5) & change them anyway.

- if that solves the fast blinking - then I haven't a clue what i'm talking about in the 90's cars & you can throw the old bulbs away

- if it doesn't solve the problem, put the original bulbs back in & put the 2 new ones back in the package in the glovebox & follow the theory "if it ain't broke (completely) don't fix it"

Mine did the same thing. It's to let you know it will need to be replaced soon. Just like the occasional chirp from a fire alarm lets you know the battery is low and will need replacing soon.

The oil change places can do this for about $6-10 (including the bulb) depending on the bulb- which is really high considering it isn't hard to replace.

But it's worth it if you don't have time to pick up the bulb and do it or if you don't care to learn how.

When the blink rate increases suddenly and significantly, it's almost always a bulb not working -- could be burned out, or could be dirty contacts, etc. Turn on the right turn signal, and notice which bulbs blink. Then repeat on the left, and notice which is missing. That's the burned out bulb. Replace the bulb, and it will be fixed.

Turn the left blinker on and walk around the car see which bulb needs replacing.

The light bulb is burned out. You can go to wal-mart or any auto parts store and find a replacement.

I've always heard that when this happens, your bulb is going bad or about to burn out.
