If the auto box is stuck in gear it sounds like there is a contamination problem with the oil. Take out the dip stick for the gear box and first check the level, second smell the oil and check its colour. If it is brown or black then the oil is cooked, it should be a bright red colour free from any smell.
If the oil is bad or your not sure when it was last changed then you need to have an oil service on the box. This requires the bottom of the box being removed, the oil replaced and the oil filter changed.
This will probably solve the problem, however it it possible for the piston that selects the different gears to be stuck. This normally happens when the oil is contaminated and results in the piston becoming scratched. If it is then its an expensive repair.

I assume this is a small Mecedes? High mileage transmission internal clutches wear out. Other thing that what happened before the problem occured? Like new battery or power cable problems? recent service transmission fluid changed with the wrong stuff?

sounds like there is a fault in the gear box itself, sorry but you will have to take it to a garage and have some diognostic checks ;( Only other thing you can do in the mean time is switch the gear box nto manual drive and work through the gears that way and see if that helps.
