The Pacific phase of World War Two (is that an oxymoron the pacific war) - - - Eruoted amidst the flurry of a suprise attack against America on December 7 1941, and on December 8 1941 against British Coloniea and The Philipines all on the other side of the International Date Line. The conflict was between the Empire of Japan and the Nations of The US of A and The British Empire which at the time contained Canada and Australia and New Zealnd, and forces from the Dutch Colonial Empire and The French Colonial Empre. But mainly the fight was with America and The British Empire.
America became involved because The Japanese blundered into attacking America. It is one of the wierd unsolved mysteries of history. Historians argue that the Japanese were blinded by Miltariasm, held in bondage by a powerful military cliche bent on World Domination, and it is often cited that Japan needed 'resources' and was unable to pay for they so Japan decided to seize them
The Mystery is why did Japan attack America? Yes it can be argued that Japan 'needed' resources, resources available in Mayaya / Indonesia, a native population held in bondage by the Empires of Britain and of the Dutch. And Japan had solid plans to take Indonesia and Malaysia. Sensible plans that took into account an America upset and likelly to declare war - - - - eventually.
America had 'insulted' Japan repeatedly through the 1930's. America was never certain how to deal with 'Asians,' and it can be argued that racism played a part though the Japanese were equally rude & nasty, But America was a demoracy and no matter how loudly President Rioosevelt spoke, it was still up to American citizens through Congress to vote for war.
Japan had a perfectly sensible plan up to around 1939-40. Ignore America. Invade Indonesia and Malaya. Seize French Colobial Southeast Asia (Vietnam). Concentrate effort on their true objective and risk America declaring war ---- eventually. Then work to catch the American Navy Fleet in the deep waters north of the Phillipines and beat the cr@p out of the Americans.
Then a man named Admiral Ichiro Yamota stepped in; he suggested a preemptive strike against America at a place called Pearl Harbor on O'ahu in the US Terriotory of Hawai'i. He even suggested sneaking in on a Sunday when most true blue Americans were in Church on their way to a picnic or a football game or the movies or all of the aforementioned.
Thus it was that on December 7th 1941 the Japanese launched a spectacular attack against the largely unprepared American fleet and neighboring airfields. Lots of big explosions, over two thousand casulties. Lots of superficial damage. Two big Name Ships of a type that would prove to be of lesser impoirtance in the Pacific War, the Arizona and Ohlakoma Destroyed, other battleships sunk yet later repaired, several smaller ships destroyed, others damaged.
Damage. Ships sunk in shallow water within a hundred yards of the best repair facilities in the middle The Pacific Ocean - - - facilities largely unharmed as was a petroleum farm, the most valuable target of all, all of the truly important targets ignored in Yamoto's 'brilliant plan.'
Quite Frankly, Franklin Delano Roosevelt for all his oratory and strength of will would have had a hard time getting America to go to war with Japan if Japan had not attacked Pearl Harbor. But when Americans exited Church on Sunday December 7th, or sat in the bleechers at a game, or simply hung out with friends on a beach, when those Americans had their Sunday interrupted by news of the bombing they got upset. Really upset. Upset enough to storm across the Pacific and rip the Japanese a new hole.
America was aided by the British, but the British had their handful in Europe, Oh and America went to war against Germany & Italy - - - - because the twin indiots Declared War Against America. Which they did not need to do even if they had a pact with Japan. It is entirely possible that Americans would have argued for a Japan first and maybe only policy if Hitler was not such an idiot.
Japan had the resources to fight the light forces that Britain had in the Pacific, but Japan did not have the resources to fight America even if Yamato's plan had wiped out The Pacific Fleet. Which it didn't and it didn't matter because Yamoto did not demand that the Admiral in Charge of the actual attack destroy the repair facilities and petroleum farm/storage.
And Japan could not face the flood of American Industrialization. The War became a brutal slugging match between two terribly unequal opponents. Japan scored successes but reverses set in and island by island Japan lost an empire they had spent nearly a hundred years abuilding. Then Japan's home island came under increasingly brutal aireal bombing until a pair of atomic bombs broke their will to continue.
America concluded the war with compassion rather than vengeance and help to build a New Japan, one set on a path of peace not war.

The pacific front in the war was, as you know because Japan was an axis power along with Germany, Italy, and Turkey ( Ottoman Empire) but the reason we had to go on the pacific front is because Japanese culture dictates that it is a shame not only on you but your entire family for you to admit defeat, having said that, there was no other way for the war to end unless the Japanese where not only forced out of China, but there had to be an unconditional surrender to the allied forces ( USA, UK, Western Europe basically, China and Russia, also small parts of Egypt, and other African nations) but for the most part in American's eyes we had to defeat the Japanese to get some pride back for Pearl Harbor, and also that the allies wanted there to be no repeat of the war in the future, and the unconditional surrender was the only was, the same went for Germany and the other axis forces which fell months before the Japanese had.. thats where the Manhattan project was used and the bombs where dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forcing the surrender via- massive casualties

After WW1, in which the Japanese actively supported the western allies, the small yellow men thought themselves equal to the western colonial powers and thus also in the right to own a colony or two, how dumb of them, only white men can have colonies of course.
By the time they found out the big white boys didn’t care much for non white players in the colonists club it was already to late.
Unknown to the big white boys the small yellow men lived conform this strange philosophy in which losing face was les desirable than dying.
The fact they now also faced economic ruin didn't improve the situation much and so the little yellow men started a terrible war they knew beforehand they could only win by KO in the first round.
Unfortunately for them KO in the first round didn’t prove feasible, so during the following rounds they died in heaps, until the white boys, tired of dying also, decided to unleash the wrath of the gods onto the little yellow men.
Confronted by the wrath of the gods the little yellow men quickly realised that losing from the gods was something you could do without losing face and thus they surrendered.
So this is the history of the pacific war.
Star players with the colonist club; The British Empire, The US of A.
In a supporting role; The Dutch, The French.
The little yellow men had no allies, they only got some Fascist moral support.
Greetings, Frans

Depends on who We are. However, assume that you are American. - Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. Japan is in the phillipines, eargo......
If we are British, then Britain had collonies and trading interests in Malysia, Burmah, etc. Japan wanted raw materials, specifically oil and decided to invade Burmah, thus getting rid of the British and establishing themselves as the dominant power within the region. The British didn't like being attacked and thought back.
Australia - Australians were British allies, therefore fair game for the Japanese military, as far as they considered.
China. Guese what? Japan attacked them.
Hmmm. I would say that, since Japan was being so unfreindly, that might explain your countries involvement in the philipines.

The war in the Pacific started first when the Japanese attacked the US Navy in Hawaii in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu.
The war in Europe and Africa began when the Germans supported their Japanese allies and when Germany attacked England by air and France by invasion, we entered the war on that side.
Our allies were England, Russia, and the French exile government.

If you are American, than the answer is that we were at war with the Japanese after Pearl Harbor. The Japanese had basically also invaded China and the Phillipines among others. The Japanese considered themselves to be the one pure race with all others considered to be sub-human and therefor of no more value than an animal. To them, this fantasized racial purity supposedly justified their heinous treatment of all non-Japanese peoples. A brief look into the history of Japanese aggression and atrocities against these invaded peoples will show you very clearly why Americans felt it necessary to fight and destroy Japan. It had little to do with regaining pride after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, although this was a great motivational theme, and much to do with the nature of the evil we chose to stand against. At the time of WWII the majority of Americans believed that as a country we had a duty to aid and defend others who stood against oppression and evil. I am focusing on the Japanese because you asked about the pacific "part" of the war. Consider the nationally sanctioned and commanded use of the mass raping of women and children as a valid weapon of war... and that is just the tip of the atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese military. Think of the girls kidnapped to provide sex for the Japanese military (referred to as "comfort woman" ). You often hear of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as inhuman and perhaps, even probably, it was. But there is no denying that the number of lives lost in those two cities pale against the over 12 million tortured and killed by the Japanese in WWII. A huge number of those were civilians and POWs used for horrendous medical experiments, (many even worse than the well publicised atrocities of Dr Joseph Mengeles of Germany) mostly (this is well documented) without benefit of even a humane amount of anathesia. Many were given to medical students to dissect alive so they could know anatomy. Many were used to test bacteriological weapons, then dissected alive to observe the destruction of the body in full breakdown. Consider also the horrendous battle of Okinawa where over 10,000 American lives were lost due to the insanity of the Japanese credo of war. It will help you gain a perspective as to why the atomic bomb was felt to be the only way to put an end to all the killing. As a nation, Japan had chosen to fight to the bitter death of all even in the face of overwhelming defeat (so-called death before dishonor). The atomic bomb changed that perspective and brought peace through Japans total and unequivicol surrender at last. The Allies were the good guys!they included America, Canada, Australia, England, France, and eventually Russia to name a few. Although Hitler and Stalin originally were in accord, once Hitler chose to invade Russia that all changed, including which side Russia would be allied with. The Russians lost millions of civilian lives to Hitler's invasion and insane siege of Stalingrad. The axis, which is what the other combined forces were called (the Allies fought the Axis) was composed primarily of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Italy was the first to surrender, much to Hitler's anger. Some countries such as Switzerland and Spain chose to turn a blind eye to the evil of an unjust war and the horror of the Holocaust ( the murder of over 6 million Jews in an attempt to totally wipe out the Jewish race)by claiming neutrality and profited greatly from the war.
