I am getting a check today, but I have no money in that account to cover it. If I deposit this check, can I take half of it today? I can't wait a week for this money, and I can't go to a check cashing place, cause its a personal check. thanks.

you will have to ask the bank for their policies but i have a feeling they will want you to deposit the whole thing and wait a couple days.

Your own bank will let you have part of the money immediately, like the first $100. They 'hold' the rest until the check clears.

However, even without an account, the check-writers bank will cash it for the full amount -- because they can check THAT account balance on the spot. If the writer's account won't cover the check, then you save the bounced fees everywhere else. Your OWN bank can charge you fees if you try to deposit/cash a check that bounced, especially if it happens more than once.

If I were you I would go to the nearest wal-mart to cash that check. As long as you do not have check fraud or anything like that they will cash your check for at least five or seven dollars. I think you should try that, if going to the bank does not work for you. If it is a personal check then you should go to that bank first or call and ask before you go there and make a big mistake or be embarrassed you know how bank tellers can be sometimes.

Try going to the bank of the person that wrote you the check. Likely they will cash their own checks, I think. My wife is a banker if she where here right now I would give you a definite answer.

But, I think you can cash it at the bank the person that wrote you the check for.

Take the check to that person's bank and cash it.

It really depends on how long you have had this acct. ; and also if you have had any problems with your acct; as well as what bank it is. I do know you can get a hundred dollars from your check.
