You can have a network with a mix of W98, XP, and Vista.
However, with XP Home and the home versions of Vista, there is a maximum of 4 users (could be 5 but I believe 4 is accurate) on a peer to peer network.
If you have a network now with a DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) server, set up the vista machine to obtain IP automatically and you are on. If you do not have a DHCP server, you need to set up a static IP consistant with your existing network.
By the way, if you have internet connection, you probably have a router connecting to the internet and the private side of the router likely provides DHCP. If you do not have a router, you probably have one pc connecting to the internet and the other pcs use Internet Connection Sharing and there is no DHCP server.
