Politicians want votes. They are more concerned with getting and staying elected than in doing what is right for America now a days. The left see millions of new votes once every illegal here is allowed to stay and to get on the welfare rolls.

It's simple.

Congress doesn't have to deal with a large number of illegal immigrants on a day to day basis. Maybe they have one or two working for them, but they don't have to actually be in the real world in a city that 15 years ago was all one homogenous group, and now is about 20% illegal immigrants. No, I am not kidding. Marshalltown, Iowa, a small town in central Iowa, used to be all Americans. Sure, there were some immigrants here, but because they were a small group, they became a part of the community because the other option was to remain separate and alone. Now, mostly because of the meat packing plant, nearly 20% of the town doesn't even speak English on a regular basis. The strain on social services and the education system, health care system, etc, etc, has been HUGE.

"But they are working. Why is that a strain?" Let me tell you a dirty little secret about meat packing plants. They will hire anyone. And keep them on for about 90 days or so. Then, they have a tendency to fire a number of them. Why? They don't have to pay benefits for them that way. Then they just hire another group and they cycle continues. Another county in Iowa, Black Hawk county, has been hit very, very hard because of this practice.

Politicians in Washington have the luxury of not having to live in the real world. That's how they can do something like they are doing with the immigration bill.

I was watching Cavuto On Business one day on Fox and he was talking with a politician about illegal immigration and mentioned that the politician had just been in Iowa and was blasted with questions about illegal immigration. Cavuto said, "I didn't know there was an illegal immigration problem in Iowa." I e-mailed him a list of about a dozen newspaper articles about raids in different ag plants here in Iowa, a story about a group of men arrested, charged, and found guilty of smuggling illegals into northwest Iowa to work at egg plants, and another story about how employers take advantage of illegals because they are illegal and cannot go to the Iowa Department of Labor.

I think that the Senate is too far removed from its constituents and it refuses to see that this is an important issue to both parties. Illegal immigration is a far different issue than legal immigration and on a gut level, people recognize it as a problem, but the senate isn't listening.

I wish you had cited which polls you are talking about. Not having examples to work with I will have to reply in generalities. I assume people poll highly about wanting something done about illegal alien immigration and probably want legal immigration improved as well. However, I don't for one minute believe that this particular piece of legislation is at all what reformers had in mind.

It is like reducing the crime rate in your town by making burglary legal.

Perhaps because, similar to Congress' failure to heed voters regarding the Iraq "war," they are not attending to the mandate of the people.

Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself. ~ Mark Twain
