I don't get it, they would make more money if they let you get one sooner, so why do they make you wait a year?

I even went to Best Buy to buy out of the providers store they refused to sell it to me because they said I needed to wait a year. and they needed all of my cell acount info.

well basically, most companies will give you one phone per year with your signing of a contract but they will still allow you during that year period to purchase a phone at full cost to replace the reduced cost or free phone. Technically they make more money this way because the phone you get upon sign up is either free or reduced cost. The phone that you want in the middle of your contract is full cost to buy at that point and they are hoping that you are so in love with the product that you will not wait for a resign period but just buy it on am impulse.

Well cell phone companies make all there profits on the services they provide ie. calling, texting, downloads, news, and gps stuff.
The phones they basically give away and therefore are taking a hit on as a business. Granted they can certainly afford to take the hit but we live in capitalist society where if someone can squeeze just a couple more cent out of you they will. So they make you wait your year figuring that by that time you will be so ready to get rid of your phone that you will want a phone that you actually have to pay a little bit on it, instead of the cheapest or free ones because you have been waiting to get a new shiny phone for 12 months.
Thats my theory anyway...

You've mixed up cell phone manufacturers with mobile service providers... mobile service providers makes you wait a year to upgrade your phone because they subsidize the price of your new phone to induce you to renew your subscription contract with them...
If you wanted to buy cell phone from cell phone manufacturers (Nokia, Samsung, Sony-erricsson, etc) without discount, you can buy anytime at any quantity, no need to wait 1 year.
