My Compaq pc shut down the other day without warning. I then received this error message. The pc will not reboot from the hard drive only from a recovery disk I made earlier. What can I do.

Just reinstall your system it's a system file that's corrupted thats why it wont boot, if you have win xp disc reboot ur system go into the bios and change first boot device to cd-rom instead of hd0. Save then reboot make sure your win xp disc is in the drive it should autorun you will get the message to boot from cd-rom hit anykey. Hit the space bar or anyother key follow on screen promps remeber to format C:\ partition just do the quick format. if you have any trouble feel free to e:mail me and i will help you. OK

This file should be on your hard drive located here:

C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe 2,086 28/02/2007

If it is not there then it can be extracted from:

C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386\SP2.cab

There are various versions of this file but the latest one seems to be the Feb-2007 one that is 2,086 bytes.

See if you can boot in Safe Mode and try and copy or extract this file to the driver cache folder.

With little description you gave, I can only narrow it to memory problem, try replacing the memory first.
