Yes, well, at least I hope so, his character does set the grounds for his potential to become a great wizard with formidable magical strengths and and abilities (with reference to the prophecy) save for his social weaknesses. And, J.k.R almost always manages to place him in important scenes and situations. I think, he will, in the end, play a portentous role in determining voldemort's end, but that's for J.K to decide. In the mean time, he's the reclusive teenager, who "might have been" the chosen one.

I think he has great potential. In the last two books he has begun to gain confidence and outgrow his lack of self-confidence. I think (and this is unsubstantiated as of yet) that it is possible that he has great abilities that are bottled inside him. I think there is a possibility that he witnessed his parents' demise and his grandmother put a memory charm on him that may have been a bit too strong (like the gal from the Ministry and Crouch) so that he wouldn't remember it. Eventually, maybe he'll be able to break through it, maybe it is permanent. I also would like to know if anything is written on the wrappers that his mother gives him. I can't help but wonder if their healing has been hindered by the nurse or someone else. I think there is a great deal about Neville and his family yet to be discovered.
But then, only the last book will verify anything or inform me that I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Well, there are rumours that Hogwarts will re-open and a classmate of Harry´s will become a teacher in "Deathly Hallows", and it won´t be one whom we would think most about. Perhaps it could be Neville. His best subject is herbology and he is really very good at it. OK, there IS a teacher for herbology, Prof. Sprout, but perhaps she will take over transfiguration for the new headmistress, McGonagall... AND: There has to be found a new teacher for DADA, too. Neville isn´t bad at that subject either.
I don´t think he will become really "great" in book 7, but will play some role helping Harry to defeat Voldemort, because he is brave and a true friend of Harry´s. Perhaps he and Luna will come together, too. Look, in book 6 he is not the idiot any more: After what had happened in the ministry at the end of book 5 his gran began to be proud of him! And in the end of book 6 he fought bravely, too. He will be an equal to many members of the Order of the Phoenix and important for Harry, I think. Isn´t that enough?

Only JKR knows for sure, and the rest of us will have to wait for Book 7 to find out. But out of all the characters, Neville's the one we've seen improve the most in magical ability and general competence. At first, it seems he can't get anything right; in OOTP, he's one of the best students in the D.A. and gives a good account of himself at the battle at the Department of Mysteries. And in HBP, he does the same thing again when the Death Eaters invade Hogwarts.
I'd look for great things from Neville, both in Book 7 and after the books (assuming he survives). I'd also look for him to get his revenge on Bellatrix Lestrange for what she did to his parents. He needs to be careful, though ... his hatred of Bellatrix means he could REALLY rake her over the coals with a Cruciatus curse, but it also puts him at some risk of pulling an Anakin Skywalker. "Beware the Dark Side" is as true in the wizarding world as it is in Star Wars.

I think that Neville has the potential to become a strong and confident wizard, and I believe we'll see that in DH.

Neville is much more interesting since discovering he could have been "the chosen one." I'll bet you he play an important role in the next book. We'll see though.

I hope so, poor Neville is always stuffing up or something - poor boy. I love the bit when his Uncle hung him outside the window by his ankles and he fell and he just bounced to see if he had any wizarding abilities.

Well, if you read the books, he has a natural flair for plants, despite his fear of Professor Snape. He could be said to reflect the socially awkward teenagers who become confident adults, and he has the potential to become a great scientist, in the area of Botany/horticulture.

Honestly, who knows, but at the same time the people who seem to not be the best in school may turn out to be someone great.
