I usually convert Word documents with pdfonline.com.
I need to protect some of them in order to prevent to be copied and modified (copy and paste function).
My documents need to be available online and therefore I can protect them with a password: it'd be to complicate to give it to the "right" people and besides I want them to be readable freely.
Pdfonline.com doesn't offer this option; what should I do?
I'm not very practical with computers so please be clear if you can...
Thank you.

Look online for PDF converters. These basically are a virtual printer driver where the output is a PDF file instead of a sheet of paper. You can nail down the security in several ways including read & edit passwords, no copy to clipboard, no printing, 128 encryption pretty much anything.

Not all the converters do the same thing in the same way but they all produce a PDF compatible out put.

Hunt them down at http://www.download.com You shouldn't need to pay to test most of them and there are many free ones too.

Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is a great tool but it is not designed to be tamper proofed.

Dishonest people can edit the PDF and change the text. I am not going to tell you how it is done as this helps the dishonest people.

I understand that a tiff document cannot be altered but I am unsure of this. You may wish to check into this.

If you must have highly secure documents that cannot be altered, you may need a more sophisticated system which includes passwords, etc. It costs more and is more work but if security is critical for your operation, it is the way to go.
