Do you think that children should be taught archery at school?
Should children be taught to hunt? Should children be taught to find food in forests and taught how to survive?

Greetings, Alex;

Since the U.S.A. is a country mostly centered around sports of a "spectator" style (football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc) where the action is normally "fast and furious", and archery is normally "slow and dull", I don't think archery will ever be nearly as prominent in our society as football, baseball, etc. After all, when was the last time you heard of anyone winning an archery scholarship to Harvard? Archery, unfortunately, is considered to be less exciting than golf in the U.S.

That being said, I do feel that archery should be taught in schools - and it is already, in many schools across America and in many other countries. It certainly helped me to learn some discipline, and to NOT expect instant results in my life. At the very least, archery teaches eye-hand coordination and is useful for teaching Physics.

Teach children how to hunt? Yes, if you want your children to learn. It doesn't matter whether the child is male or female (boy or girl), gender does not really matter when it comes to ability to kill; whether a person **wants** to kill is the question. I have seen many women hunters who are much better at hunting than any of the men they go hunting with. Teach children to hunt with bow & arrow? YES!! Perhaps they will learn to respect the animals they kill, and to not be so reckless in their hunting; it is much harder to shoot an animal five times with a bow than it is with a rifle. Also, there is no room for excuses such as "I thought the safety was on" or "I didn't know it was loaded".

I feel that everyone who is at all interested in being anywhere near a wilderness area should have at least some training in survival skills. It doesn't take much to become lost, even if you know the area "like the back of your hand", simply because of injury or a sudden storm - or a broken flashlight (it happened to me, last year, right here at home). A night out in the woods, alone, can be a very frightening experience and being frightened can easily lead to being dead if you do not have any survival training.

I apologize if any of this seems "preachy", but it is how I feel. I hope this is of some help to you, Alex.

Archery does look cool like Robyn Hood lol
not sure about hunting but it is a boy thing & most boys would do it at some stage even if its in the form of fishing, finding food in the forrest is good not animals though & being taught to survive is a smart move

Archery was extremely popular, back when it was an essential part of life. Now we have guns, so not as many see the need for archery, but the same can be said of competition shooting.

Archery will only become more prominent if we acknowledge the arrow of our ways...

Until then, there's no point. Archery enthusiasts will just keep getting the shaft.
