Transportation, customs and taxes are a big part of the reason. Iceland depends a lot on imported goods. Also the high costs of everything (workforce, resources, material) in Iceland add to it. A shop needs to buy goods abroad, have them brought to Iceland, pay the customs, pay its employees to work in the shop and pay the rent, insurances and other operating costs etc., so they must increase the price a lot from the price they bought it for abroad. Add up to 24.5% VAT to the price and you start to see why everything is so expensive here.

Don't always look at the negative points. why don't you try to see the cheap things? Ice is cheap.
