When I got home from work, the display in my monitor is now too wide. The vertical part of the screen is doing fine except that it really is too wide. I tried adjusting using the PROPERTIES and changed the SETTING but it won't budge and then restoring the system of the computer by going to Accessories and clicking on SYSTEM RESTORE and selected a few days ago but still no luck. I also tried the MENU option in the monitor where you can adjust the brightness and the contrast of the monitor. I've already tried adjusting the breadth and width of the display. Im having a headache now, can anyone please help me?

I don't know how this happened but my sister was the one who used the computer last night. She must have played a game or something which made the monitor display too wide. *I have read somewhere that when you play CERTAIN games, it will automatically adjust the display on your monitor.* Maybe something like this happened. Im not blaming anyone.

I am assuming that you have a CRT based monitor.

Does the width control of the monitor have any effect?

If not, are the lines on the screen at the edges of the image straight? Or are they curved, like ) ( ?

If yes, then the width control of the horizontal scan circuit is broken. You need to fix or replace the monitor.

If the width control does have an effect, then it may be that you are displaying a resolution or refresh rate that the monitor does not know how to cope with.

The ideal resolution is dependent on the screens size, 1024 by 768 is good for a 17". Refresh rate should be 75Hz or 85 Hz. Lower and you will get a headache from the flicker, any higher is pointless and the image will be fuzzier from the higher pixel rate.

If you have tried changing the screen resolution, and the display is still to wide, you probably need to adjust it at the monitor. Not knowing what kind of monitor you have, I can only give general guidelines.

Usually there will be button(s) on the monitor that when pressed will display a menu for adjusting the monitor. If you go through the menu you should find an option that will let you widen or narrow the display. Because every graphic card and every monitor is a little different, there is no way they can create a monitor that works with every card perfectly (or a card that works with every monitor perfectly). So all monitors include buttons to let you manual adjust if needed.

If you set the resolution at 1024 X 768 and it is still too wide adjust the monitor settings to correct. If it will not correct then you probably have a faulty monitor.

Right-Click the Empty area of your desktop > Properties > Settings > and change the resolution to1024 by 768 pixels. apply it. If the prob aint solved then Advanced > Monitor, and change the refresh rate to lowest.
