How do you start a referendum?

I have heard that any group or organisation has the right to start a referendum that thje local authority must assist with (financially etc).

Is this true???

If so, what types of organisation, how do you start one etc?

Any info appreciated

Not sure if you want a National, Regional or Local referendum (a public vote on a one off subject) or what you wish to change via same. The law of the land in UK is nationwide so I think you must be referring to a National referendum but these are rare (eg.mid 1970s one to leave the EEC) & only ever done for subjects of real National importance; eg; if UK government ever wishes to join the Euro, or to ratify the "United States of Europe" EU Constitution. Whatever you wish to change would be better achieved by identifying who would be responsible (Government, County Council, local Council etc) for it & then mobilising as much support as you can to lobby them to bring it about.

Organize a core group to get 10 percent of the signatures of all the voters to support a change in government or law with at least 3 percent of every congressional district represented as provided for in the Constitution. The proposal will be subjected to a referendum.
