1. All reflex actions are involuntary in nature but all involutary actions are not reflexes as the beating of heart is an involuntary action but is not reflex action.
2.Reflex actions are v. quick but all involutary actions may not be v. fast as in heart beating.
3A reflex action may involve any muscle or a gland as we withdraw our hand on touching a hot object BUT all involuntary actions involve only smooth i.e., involuntary or cardiac muscles.
4. Reflex actions are at the level of spinal cord whereas the inv. actions generallly involve brain too
5. Nerves and autonomious nervous system can increase or decrease the rate of inv. actions but reflex actions can be controlled by great will only and are not usually controllable.
6. reflex actions are done to meet emergencies where as an inv.action may or may not be for just meeting an emergency but may be a critical lie process as circulation of blood, swallowing of food, movement of food in food pipe, etc.
7. A reflex action may be conditioned as in the case of salivation response by a dog on just hearing the bell (even when food is not supplied ) in Pavlov's expt. but an inv, action would not be generally influenced by external conditioning.

A reflex action is an automatic (involuntary) neuromuscular action elicited by a defined stimulus.
A reflex action or reflex is a biological control system linking stimulus to response and mediated by a reflex arc. Reflexes can be built-in or learned. For example, a person stepping on a sharp object would initiate the reflex action through the creation of a stimulus, (pain) within specialized sense receptors located in the skin tissue of the foot. The resulting stimulus would be transmitted through afferent, or sensory neurons to the spinal cord. This stimulus is usually processed by an interneuron to create an immediate response to pain by initiating a motor (muscular) response which is acted upon by muscles of the leg, retracting the foot away from the object. This retraction would occur as the pain sensation is arriving in the brain which would process a more cognitive evaluation of the situation.
Voluntary and involuntary actions
With the help of your peripheral nerves, you are able to carry out voluntary and involuntary actions.
If you pick up a mug, clap your hands or lift weights in the gym, you are performing voluntary actions. You are conscious of what you're doing. Your brain receives nerve impulses and analyses them before you decide what to do next.
In contrast, your heart beats and your intestines digest without your conscious control. Involuntary actions such as these are regulated by your autonomic nervous system. The autonomic part of your peripheral nervous system ensures that all your internal organs and glands function smoothly.
Your autonomic nervous system has two parts: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. Both supply essentially the same organs but cause opposite effects. This is because their activating chemicals, or neurotransmitters, are different.

Lesee. Involuntary, happens outside the brains control, voluntary does not. IV can be triggered by someone other than the owner of the action (knee jerk test), involuntary is on a more basic level (breath, heartbeat, etc), voluntary action originates in the cerebrum/cerebellum, involuntary in the medulla oblongota, voluntary is indicative of a higher life form (viruses/bacterium/protsits/plants/fungi do not exhibit voluntary action). Finally, both use the same nervous system.

Automatic, unthinking or habitual actions are often said to be reflex actions so the terminology for reflex and involuntary actions is almost interchangeable. The key word is almost. Reflex actions usually are a response, without thinking, to a stimulous such as your eye closing if dust is thrown, knee jumping if hit right by a doctor, coughing if something gets stuck in your throat. A classic involuntary action is your brain functioning, your heart beating and so forth; breathing, a charlie horse... Involuntary actions are not so much of a reaction as simply an action we perform without realizing it and supposedly without outside stimuli. Normally they cannot be prevented. Try telling your heart to stop beating or your brain not to think...Ofcourse there are some people even that comes naturally for so I guess there are exceptions to every rule :-) So think in terms of inside versus outside of the body and action versus reaction, internal versus external, controllable as opposed to uncontrollable as well as the fact that reaction or reflex can be learned such as vomiting at the smell or taste of veggies or fish but you can't learn how to make your heart beat so it is an unlearned or involuntary action. If that is not clear enough make a chart of the reflex actions I named and of the involuntary ones and label whether they are controllable in general or uncontrolable, managed internally or externally etc. I hope that helps.
A scientist named Pavlov did an experiment with dogs, Every time he fed them he rang a bell. Pretty soon they salivated as soon as they heard the bell ring and it did not matter then if he gave them food when he rang the bell or not, they still salivated. That was a conditioned reaction. I would classify it as a reflex reaction to hearing the bell ring, an involuntary action cannot be conditioned. Ofcourse, it is to be remembered that there are exceptions to every rule. While you and I may not be able to tell our hearts how fast or slow to beat or a headache to stop hurting and get any result, there are monks and Llamas in Tibet who can control their breathing and heartbeat to almost non-existant and there are people who practice mind over matter who can stop their own headaches. So those don't seem to be involuntary actions for them.

Reflex actoin is that action where the electrical signals need not reach to your brain.It is directly controlled by the cells of hte spinal coloum & Involuntary actions are that actions which are directly controlled by your brain & not by you.

- when your bottle of beer falls u try and save it till the last moment..and swear when u cnt do the saving part

Involuntary action is when:
- u smile even when u want to cry
- u try and work when ther's soccer on tv
