the meaning of this special day.

-Nothing too heavy (only 9), but I would like her to appreciate it for more than just a BBQ day off.

Is there a veterans cemetery nearby or any organizations planning a Memorial Day ceremony? We've taken my daughters to Memorial Day ceremonies since they were born. At 5, the oldest one could explain the meaning behind the day. At 7 she spoke enough French to say thank you to the vets who came to the ceremony in Lux. (Trust me, they can handle the explanation!) This year we will be going to the Maddingly American Cemetery outside of Cambridge, UK. My husband will be helping a widow lay a wreath in honor of her husbands WWII unit.

And thank you for teaching her that it's not just a party weekend!! hugs!

You should explain to her why Memorial day is celebrated. You can read a kiddy book to her about it before a nice BBQ with your family members and friends i'm assuming. Maybe she will tell the other kids that go to the event about it. GOOD LUCK! =]

Considering that San Diego is a military town, there are plenty of places to go. The Midway Museum might be a good place to start.

Lead by example.
Have a fun day, but explain that you honor those who gave you that privilege.
