I am going on the assumption that you are speaking of a pre-arranged meeting in which, you both are aware, that you are searching for a life partner. With that said, I would ask the person to state just what they are looking for in someone. If that resulted in my being just the opposite of what that person wanted, I wouldn't bother asking my questions. If I did fit, I would ask about love, loyalty, family and where they would reside.

I would want to know the following.
1. Does he/she have a temper, or are they easy going?
2. Is he/she lazy?
3. Is he/she a giver, and is not selfish?
4. Before I would consider him/her as lifetime partner, I would have to know that there is mutual respect for one another.
It goes without saying that I would have to be physically attracted to him/her, and have the same goals and outlook on life.
If you are at that stage of your life take into account all of these points that I have made, and good luck to you.

Obviously, there are lot of questions you can ask but in the first meeting you want to break the ice and get to know them. In other words, listen more then you speak, communicate naturally instead of making it feel like its an interview. The reason being you are both taking your first step sto know them. An ideal question would be so how are you feeling about us talking to each other. Get to know their feelings to see how comfortable or shy they are. Then find some similarities from the first question to see how you are feeling and let the conversation take place naturally. In time you should ask where he/she see themselves in 5 years personally and professionally which should give you a good idea to how the person thinks down the road. Be yourself, relax and let the conversation come to you.

In fact is not just a question of asking, but also providing information regarding self so that the other person can answer accordingly.
This will help in communicating each other's views aspirations requirements and hence there will be a clear idea what each one is getting into and help in taking decisions to both

Hey I don't know. First of all the woman I married we first met in a mutual place of interest. But I met others before her and after I did meet her I realized that she was the one.
My fist question to here is "What's your name?" I had no idea it would work out to marriage.

So, what have you read lately? No, really, I don't mean in the check - out line. I mean, like, you know, when you crack a book, sit down and digest its contents? "People"? Oh, I guess that could count. Hey? Would you like to go to a mud wrestling bar tonight? You get free peanuts!!!
