how is the rate of physical growth of an infants head different from that of the rest of its body?

It grows at a slower rate, relative to the proportional size of the body. If it grew at the same rate, everybody would have huge heads and wouldn't be able to stand up because they'd be so heavy. (Reference the chart at the link below).
