It's the best deal I've found in a month (most used car places want 4k for a car w/150k miles). I can't afford much more than 3k. Under the hood looks clean, no leaks from under the car after 30 mins of driving, good tires, a/c is kind of loud, maybe needs brake fluid, almost immaculate interior and a great body except 3-4 small dents.

I kind of want to trust this small used car dealership. I pointed out 2 cars that I liked and she told me the Alero has a transmission problem.

just from assuming I looked it up for you in my area the low end value is 3275.00 you can double check using www.nada.com it will give you an accurate price. Personally I wouldn't buy a used car with over 40 k miles on it but that's just me. you should get a mechanic you trust to check the car out for you before you buy it.

Its nice to come across a question where the consumer has done some homework, just to make sure you covered all the bases during your 30 min test drive go to this link on my web-site http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html

Re..."your additional details" After having sold cars for 30 years I am not proud to say don't trust any seller, buying a vehicle is a process of steps getting value for your bucks. you being told the Alero has a tranny problem is known in the industry as a switch car to gain the buyers trust. Example the salesperson tells you stay away from this car and you suddenly have some trust in seller and will go with whatever is recommended, I am not saying such is the case but its an angle used by some pro - salespeople.

As for buying a vehicle in your price range CONDITION becomes the main factor before Make - model - year - or miles. sure its easy to say buy a Honda or Toyota, but in your price range the pickings become very slim, Yes the Dodge Stratus did have some negative factors but then again for the money I would still consider purchase providing vehicle will pass my type inspection.

go to my hobby website and study the 10 steps how to buy a car, its free advice with no string attached. http://www.usedcartips.org/

i will be perfectly honest with you, don't buy a dodge stratus, it will cost you in the end. It may sound like a good deal right know but you have to think these cars have a 150000km life, to much stuff goes wrong with them. Buy something that will last. Like a honda civic or accord. A chevrolet malibu, or impala. Please don't be another person that gets sucked into a so called good deal and pays for it in the end. do your research ,go to google and type in problems with 98 dodge stratus and see what comes up.

It's got the smaller 4-cyl engine for sure. (Optional V6). It's so far below market price I'd be a wee bit leery, esp. it's on a used car lot.

If you like it, you should find a mechanic and pay him $50-100 for him to do a full inspection on the car. If you are a AAA member they may have a inspection center in the area that will do the inspection for you for a similar fee.
