I joined because I needed the money for college. No one that I have met would say they joined for valor. The majority of enlistees are not the brightest in the world and just want to do it to get a taste of the battlefield.

While there is decent money to be made in the military, you also need to rationalize the thought. Currently, if you joined the military, there is a pretty good chance you will be shipped over sea's away from your family and loved ones. That thought alone is why i would NEVER do it.

A variety of reasons. My son joined a year ago because he is patriotic. He didn't want to go to college. And, he knows ex-military members are highly sought after in the job market. But, the bottom line is, he believes in our country and he wants to protect our freedoms.

Who do you know getting tens of 1000's of dollars to join? Maybe to reenlist. But if you're in Iraq you deserve the reenlistment bonus.

truth....my son knew when he joined that he would be going to Iraq. He knew war would certainly not be a picnic...

I'm joining (when I'm 19, I'll still be in high school when I'm 18) for the valor and service to my country, but the money helps.

I joined when I was 18 because I have a sense of duty to my family and my country. I know that the freedoms and rights that I enjoy as a citizen are paid for in blood and sacrifice.

Why should I expect someone else to do what I was not willing to do myself.

I know I joined because I was young, like to camp, stay in shape, meet some new friends, and travel around alot. Of course, this was back in 1999 before alot of things happened.

Many are inspired by the valor. Many are worked up by people that tell them what they "should" do. Unfortunately what NONE of them realize until it is to late is that "war is hell".
