There are a lot of freshwater species you can get for $.99 - $5.00. It depends a lot on the species, size/age, easy of spawning, and demand for them.

You can get some actual prices from this site: http://www.liveaquaria.com/

There are some tropical fish that are a fair price, about 30-50 dollars, but there are some that cost thousands. I live on an Island and can get some crazy ones here for cheap. I can buy a sting ray for about $60, starfish for about $30, Clown Fish for about $50, jelly Fish for $30, Random really brightly colored fish for about $20, Eels for $30, there isn't anything over a $100 I guess is the point I'm trying to make, but I also live in the middle of the Pacific and there are lots of crazy fish living in the oceans.

I have never spend over $6.50 for a freshwater fish. and that was on an angel fish. other wise i have spend$1.69 up to $4.00. I have a few different kinds of fish like neon tetras, phantom tetra. female Betta, and some African dwarf frogs and none of these in my area were over 5.00. But there are more expense ones out there. I just wanted more than one fish so i stuck with the cheaper ones so i could afford to have more than 1

In all honesty it depends on the species. I have seen some that cost $10 and others that cost several thousand.

On avg though, good species will cost $20-$40.

There are some stores that will sell the babies at a lower cost though, might want to keep an eye out for that. Can vary from store to store though.

Danios, platies, tetras etc go for between $2.50 and $4.99 depending on the type and size.
Cichlid babies go for between $4 and $22. Pleco babies for about $5 - $7.
But that's just in my area...Windsor, ON. In Detroit everything is cheaper :(
