Rev. Hale feels great guilt for having sent women to their deaths. Although by all appearances a good and God-fearing man, Rev. Hale set in motion the events that led to the so-called witches being sent to the gallows and now feels that he is the one who has become the tool of the devil.

Who said it? What is the scene? It is hard to know exactly the context for this. Though, I do like the Crucible a lot, and I do know the background of the Salem witch trials. Possibly it means that the person feels that they are going to be indicted for being a witch? All of the "witches" in Salem were hung to death. So, that might be the allusion.

don't know anything about crucible, but may be it mean 'my brain is still working' because brain get oxygen supply from blood, if it's not, your brain will be death.
