Racist remarks are made every day no matter where in this world you are. What is needed more than anything else is tolerance. If people do not get reactions then they cease doing it. Not every one but nearly every one and the rest can be punished.
Most people are too sensitive about what is said.
I have lived with remarks that really cut deep all my life and had to learn to deal with it because there is no way it was going to stop. Now I have learned to use such things to my advantage. Now I laugh at them.
I now live in SE Asia and yes I am the one that is different here in more ways than one and really get remarks because they have the idea that do not know their language. Again I use it for my benefit and laugh at them.
Wake up and face the real world and learn to get along in it.
Go to Israel if you want to really see discrimination.
Go to Iran and shoot off ur mouth and see what happens.
Come to think about it, it is very bad in the USA as well. everyone is just waiting to accuse another of what they do.
I think I will stay here and not go back to the states.

Racist words should not be punished by the courts. If you think about it, everybody gets offended by something, right? If the courts punish someone for saying something racist, what's next? Could a person who says black and white people are equal be punished? After all, maybe that statement offended a person who thinks their race is superior and sees it as an insult.
The way racist people should be punished is by being subbed by polite society. Don't invite them to your parties, but don't clog up the courts with these types of idiots, either.

I am not a racist and do not agree with racism. but punishment against racial slurs could not ever happen. Verbal abuse is not a crime and people should try and learn not to listen! If someone is being racist against you, let them know , you don't care, tell them to say what they like, agree with em, that pi**es them off more than anything. Blow them kisses! Get tough skinned! Don't let it get to you! They don't know what they are on about! They just say these things to make themselves look and feel better! Weak, weak people!!! Thats all they are!

Ask Don Imus. He was fired (and rightly so) due to his racist remarks. The Court of Public outcry is a much stronger deterrant than what the legal systems could have ever produced.

There are hate crimes. They carry seperate punishments. I don't think we need them. How do we know the hearts of a man. Besides there is hatred in most violent crimes yet most of those criminals are not charged with a hate crime. People who say stupid things are pretty much saying enough about themseves already

Unfortunately such comments are protected by the First Ammendment. While they can be hurtful, people need to learn to overlook others' ignorance.

This is the slippery slope. There is no clear line to demarcate racism.
Society is changing, improving in most ways so this line is moving too.
