XPress has the benefit of being the industry standard, in large part (as mentioned previously) by having a good hold on the periodicals market.

InDesign, in my opinion, is the vastly superior product, largely because it is specifically made to work directly with Photoshop and Illustrator.

Adobe's idea is akin to the idea in Microsoft Office: It doesn't matter what you are doing or the medium you are using, making things should have a familiar feel and flow.

But, if you need to share files with periodicals (or go to work for periodicals / companies that make ads for periodicals), you're probably wisest to get XPress. Check your customers.

Quark in general is easier to use in comparison to Indesign. The main difference between the two programs is just that very statement. Quarks interface allows ease of use and the fundamental functions required by most publication companies. Indesign is more complex and for that reason it's features are limitless. Indesign is normally used more often by pros. I use Indesign but I can tell you I'm not a pro; as a result my products are less attractive. I really like Quark cause it's simple, but I found a lot of cool things on Indesign that Quark didn't support. If you think you're up for the challenge of using Indesign go fot it :-D! It may not be easy at first but from what I've seen it can produce a better product. Another cool feature is that Indesign which is made by Adobe is also compatible with other Adode. You can use Photoshop and all that other good stuff to support your page designs. If you know Photoshop your designs will be great.

Personally, I think that InDesign is much better. It doesn't bug down as much as Quark (I had bad experiences quark crashing and then it even affected the saved files) and it's better if you want to use it in conjunction with Photoshop and Illustrator.

Oh and the thing that's bugs me a lot with quark(I was using version 6, not sure if this is fixed in 7) is that you have to make bulleted lists manually x.x . This is not the case in Indesign.

The thing with Quark, however is that it's used by more companies, becuase it's been around for a longer time. Indesign is just starting to take more and more of the market.

QUARK is used by more publications. I've had the opportunity to visit several newspapers and that program was running on almost every box
