My son got one of his school's old pcs and when we brought it home and set it up, it kept asking for us to install the modem and it had a drop down list of different ones, we tried a few, but nothing worked. We had it connected to a dial up line, but we couldn't get on line. How can we get this pc to work? Is it possible that there's no dial modem installed in it? If there isn't, could we buy one? We aren't sure how old it is, probably 1998/99 Dell. Any suggestions?

Broadcom or Connexant. It will not hurt you to experiment between the two.

If you had the phone line connected to it, it has a modem. A LAN port is too big. If you can get to the internet and download this file, you can use it to identify your parts, and backup your drivers. It is small enough to fit on a floppy.

If you are not too worried to look inside the case, you can physically look at the card and read the manufacturer label, and download generic drivers.

Right click "my computer" go to properties, hardware tab, device manager, find 'modem,' presto!

Dial up modems are dirt cheap (10 bucks). Make sure that you actually have a modem on "my network places," and see if it's connected (if you have one).
