It doesn't matter much which manufacturer you go with in terms if performance or whatever because all the inside parts are made in China anyway, and it's all the same companies that make them over there. The only exception to that is Apple, and that is why their PCs cost more. (But if you're into gaming, don't buy an apple because most games run on Windows and not OSX)
One thing I've noticed, although I don't know if it's still true, is that HP tends to put a lot of useless apps on their computers when you buy them. It's also a bit more expensive then other brands (although not neccesairly better) because it's name is very well known.
Try to look more at different models in terms of performance and what type of hardware they have than the actual brand of the laptop.

Youre not realistcaly going to get 6-10 years reliably from ANY notbook. A desktop will give you more reliability and more intermediate upgradability. If you need a notebook that long. Alienware, xps, dell, toshiba in that order. Dont even consider acer, emachines, gateway. Sony hp and conpaq should be considered in the mid tier if there is a good sale. Prices will come down in July and intel will drop prices july 22. If you can wait a while, I'd hold off till july

This is definitely an opinion but based on the laptops I've used, IBM. They're ThinkPads are built like tanks and they last practically forever. I once dropped one down a flight of steps by accident and it survived (Any laptop that can live through that kind of experience is ok by me).

I myself use a Toshiba Satellite. I got a 1.7 duel core processor. 1-gig of Ram and 110-120 gig Hard drive. The only downfall to it is that it's Windows Vista Home Premium. But, it at least works for what I need it for.

i would go with a dell xps laptop. there are two versions of the xps: an ultraportable and a "desktop replacement" (you can view these on dells website). while alienware laptops may be best for gaming, dell offers, in my opinion, a better overall product along with excellent customer service. I have always owned dells and recently purchased an xsp m1210 ( ultraportable) laptop and love it. its very fast and excellent for gaming. the laptops can be somewhat pricey but they are definitely worth it. Hope this helps, good luck!

your best bet would probabbly to go wtih and Apple iBook. They might be a little costly, but they are extremely durable and easy to work with. You might have not ever used a mac before but once you get used to it, it's really fun. It is really speedy so it can play games in a high quality. I play world of warcraft on it and it is very high quality.

I've heard good things about HP. I'd prefer a Mac but the cost for it plus perifirals are prohibitive.
