I have had betta fish in the past and they never lived longer than a few weeks for me. Right now I have one that has lived a year and a half (so far!) How long can captive betta fish live? Only answers from experienced "fishy" people please! LOL Thanks! :o)

He is kept in a regular plastic fish bowl with a small amount of cultured gravel and a small aquatic plant - no air, no heater. Weekly water change, two betta pellets and two blood worms a day. Thanks again!

I have kept and bred literally thousands of bettas and the typical life span I have seen and read is about 5 years with good care. I have had a few make it over 7 years, but that's really rare. Some have even been recorded as long as 10 years in labs.
All in all, in a filtered heated tank with proper water changes and good food expect about 5 years from a betta.
ADDITION: To help insure a long healthy life for your betta I would suggest you increase your water changes to 100% of the water once every 2-3 days and increase how much you feed him a bit. I would feed 3-4 pellets once a day and as many bloodworms as he will eat in 2-3 minutes once a day. Feed ing morning and evening would be best as well.
Also, as you don't have a heater, keep him in a quite warm area in the house. Not in the sun, but also not in the breeze of an air conditioner or anything else that would chill the bowl. He would really do best at about 75-78F. Adding a 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the bowl wouldn't hurt him at all either and would help ward off fungus infections.
Even given these changes, the conditions in a bowl will not equal the conditions provided by a filtered, heated aquarium to be totally honest, but you can keep him healthy for years and years in a bowl IF you keep the water clean.

Typically, Betta fish live 3-4 years on average. Some have been recorded to live 7-9 years, but it is rare. Betta fish must be properly cared for constantly if expected to live a long period of time. It can also depend on the age of the Betta when you bought it - if it was old and had more risk to becomeIf you want to help your Betta fish live a long and healthy life, do your research. Talk to somebody who works at a pet store or is experienced with Betta fish. Look them up online, or see if you can find a book about them. The more you know about the pet you own, the better.

I have had only one, but what a wonderful experience, He was very friendly and a real joy. Sadly he only lived 3 years but he developed a couple large lumps in back part of his body,,I feel badly because I think by feeding him the crushed snails as treats he contracted(he got) an internal disease, I believe this because my large angel fish also got fungus on mouth and fins, But I dud read when I first got him to get a good size tank, filter bubbler etc. So with live plants he could lay on and with other fish he lived a happy life, DONT FEED SNAILS<

If kept in good conditions, barring illness, injury or accidents and betta can live to a ripe old age of 7 years.
