are there any nice places for hiking/picnic 1.5 hr away from chicago? please tell me the name of the park/area and how far it is. ideally it would also have canoeing on a lake, or something fun like that. thanks!

Starved Rock State Park and Matthiasen State Park, about 70 miles west of the city, have excellent hiking trails, some of which are surprisingly strenuous - there are actual hills!

Go to REI in Oakbrook Terrace or call them (630) 574-7700 they will tell you everything you want to know about hiking/outdoors in the Chicago area. I am sure they have books with some pictures of places you may want to go to.
