I will be 40 in a few months and I understand this song so well. My Mom is a very good mother and was kind, but I never remember her playing with us. Seriously she would say I am washing the (dishes, doing laundry, ironing, mopping the floors, etc.) and I will be out after awhile. Awhile never came....ever! She is a much better Grandmother that way......If my kids want to play we play! I remember the first time I told the kids I have to get these dishes done! and realized "Who am I doing them for!" so I threw down the dishcloth and we went out to play....So, my house is messy at times...it is my house! My kids know that I love them enough to play with them and that we can put things into priorities......and sometimes it is so much more important to bond with your babies.....
Peace.

That is an awesome song - both the lyrics and the melody! I remember some of the lyrics:
My son turned 10 the other day,
Said thanks for the ball now come let's play
Will you teach me to throw, I said not today,
I've got a lot to do, he said that's okay
And he walked away and he smiled and he said
You know I'm going to be like you dad,
you know I'm going to be like you.
Cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home dad?
I don't know when
But we'll have a good time then son, you know we'll have a good time then.
He came from college just the other day,
so much like a man I just had to say,
I'm proud of you won't you sit for a while
He shook his head and said with a smile,
What I'm feeling like, dad is to borrow the car keys
See you later can I have them please.
I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I'd like to see you, if you don't mind
He said I'd love to dad if I could find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking you dad, it's been real nice talking to you.
And as I hung up the phone it occured to me
He'd grown up just like me my boy was just like me.
I thought my life would turn out like that. My dad was always too busy and I thought I'd end up too busy for him. But he is still too busy for me even though he's retired!
I don't have kids so I haven't repeated it but I feel bad for people who truly don't have time for their kids because of work demands but the song makes you wonder about those cases where it's learned behaviour. The father/mother learns from their father or mother how to treat family and it gets passed down through generations.

No. My parents divorced when I was 7, so I basically grew up without a father. My son is now 5, and my wife and I are still going strong. I don't plan on putting him through the same thing...

If I remember the any of the lyrics correctly, My wife and I went round by adopting a baby from China when our eldest child had a child turn 10.

I've performed it before. I have made it a point that I would not be like the father in the song. I am with my children and care for them always. If my boy grows up just like me, that is the example I am trying to set.

i'm nowhere near 40 but this song makes me cry almost every time i hear it.
maybe that's just because i had a crap dad. but i decided because of the way he was, i wasn't going to be like that. and i'm not.
