It seems to me that in American society being introverted is looked at as unusual or a big deal which is ridiculous. Is this neccesarily true? If so why?

I believe that extroverts are looked at by society as being more successful, talented, the best actors, singers, politicians, speakers, teachers, activists, etc.

They are also in prisons all over America.

All societies look at introverts as a big deal, because an introvert is a threat to a society's continuation. A societal structure needs people to socialize in order to be maintained. If introverts outnumbered the social butterflies, then the society would break down and be replaced by something that was very different from the current system. If you have invested a lot of energy into the current system, you have to marginalize anyone that is a threat to your way of life.

I think it's nuts! I'm extremely introverted and American school systems are always trying to get kids to be more outgoing. I'm sorry, but some kids don't like group projects... leave them alone!

What makes me so mad is that people assume that introverted folk don't have good people skills. That's completely absurd! I am introverted, but I can work in a group quite well and I am a good, well-rounded person.

I wish more people would think of introversion like I do... and it seems like you do too. It's not a bad thing. It's just not what the American entertainment industry calls "good".

Introverts are a minority in our society. Since the majority of people are extroverted, they don't have a clue what an introvert is like, and can't imagine why someone would rather be alone than spend time with others. Often introverts are labeled as being shy or withdrawn or cold or indifferent, just because they are not acting like the majority of students, teachers, and even family members. Take a look at information about Personality Type, especially the info about "Preferences" of Introverts vs Extroverts: http://www.personalitypage.com/info.html

This web site talks about how many students are extroverts (56-58%) but the majority of professors are introverts (55%):
http://www2.gsu.edu/~dschjb/wwwmbti.html No wonder students and faculty have problems interacting!

I read the book "Please Understand Me" and it discussed which types are attracted to different occupations. The majority of elementary, middle and high school teachers are ST's which value logic and data. I'm an NF and value intuition and feelings-guess how well I got along with my teachers! The majority of teachers in this environment are usually extroverts, so you can see why introverts don't have an easy time of it there either.

The business world is populated by a lot of ST's as well, so if you don't value logic and order, you're seen as emotional, illogical, and "disorderly". Needless to say, I had to get out of the business world, since I never felt like I could be myself without being considered "out of control". It depends on what you do in the business world, whether it will fit your personality-many introverts do well as computer and accounting type jobs, but of course sales people and managers had better be extroverted.

Good luck!

it really is a pretend reality and surely incorrect. there is no longer some thing incorrect with being shy...anybody become, is or receives shy or apprehensive quicker or later. even if or not this is quicker or later of their day or existence. i do not see the american Society making a wide deal about it because it really is regularly occurring.there are a number of different issues they might want to be making a larger deal of yet no longer this.

people are naturally drawn to extroverts and gregarious people as they usually seem to be smarter (they spew a lot of stuff, usually rubbish) and more popular (these people tend to have a great social life).

Introverts are usually seen as socially handicapped and unpopular as they dint mix around so much and keep to themselves. The Virgina tech killer was seen as a introvert which may or may not have contributed to his social isolation and subsequent acts.

Blindman: if the world was according to what you say, people will be mixing around all the time expressing their feelings and socialising till no work gets done

The only thing I would add is that shy or timid people are often called introverted. This isn't really the case as they are different things. Extroverts CAN be shy....but not introverted.

To be quiet is to be wise and this scares some people. There are certain individals that are intimidated by people who are quiet and reserved.

However, what would life be like if everyone had the personality of Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen, and Donald Trump?

I heard so and I wonder about it too. Just be yourself is what I say. In India if we are extroverted they call a woman a hoe and a man whatever. But its culture that what asks what you can be or not be. I dont care. I am a flamboyant girl, I do what I want, and I say what I want. I live life to the hilt. Be what you are and be what you like. Someone deserves you and me so whats in it for them huh?

Or you can keep your thoughts to yourself and let everybody wonder.
