Pretty much for me the Action...how well it plays!!! As far as sound, depends on what amp you're playing through!!! I play my Gibson SG through a Marshall amp & I'm so satisfied.....but I'd step up to a Les Paul again if you'll buy me one!!!

A good electric guitar should have these qualities
1. Nice look and paint;Polished.
2. Strings that are easy to press down on the fretboard.
3. A nice sound.
4. Light weight
5. Easy to hook up with amps
This is what a good electric guitar should have in my opinion.

I like a guitar with enough play in the frets to slide easy and push the strings down easy.
Watch out for Rosetta bridges and the like... tough to tune.
It's crazy, but I have had 5 electric guitars and my favorite one is the cheapest one, an Ibanez GSA 60. I use that one onstage.

Everything from the wood(s) used to the electronics used, the pickups (composition, windings etc.) to the action and intonation. Personally, I'm a Fender Telecaster man myself. I stereo wire my guitars and rewind the pickups myself, and have been very satisfied with the results. I'm also building my dream guitar for my nephew, right now, using a telecaster style body I made with a Stratocaster style neck I made and rewound Stratocaster Tex-Mex pickups (I rewound them so they still have that sound, but are hotter, closer to Texas blues pickups in sound). This allows me to put everything I've learned, over the years, about what makes a good guitar into use, and to tinker to make it even better.

What makes a good electric guitar? One that you can get your hand around the neck, that fits you and your style of playing, that has a straight neck and no issues with the electronics, and one that sounds the way you want.

here's how i've bought every guitar i've ever owned. i decide how much i want to spend. i never spend over 500 bucks, most of the time never more than 400. i ask the store clerk to show me every guitar in the store new and used in that range. i play everyone one of them and figure out which one plays best for the sound i am going for. i always bring my own amp in the store so i know how it will sound with my own gear. i dont' care what the guitar looks like or what color it is. i only care about the sound. i play em all til i find one i like. gibson and prs and all those other 1000 dollars guitars are overrated.

Action, tone, and playability

for my money, the Gibson SG is my favorite out of what I've had/have: a Yamaha, Washburn, Epiphone, 3 Ibanezes (RG. JEM, and Prestige), and 4 Gibsons (SG, 2 Explorers, and a VooDoo Les Paul)

Wood used (mahogany, basswood, maple, etc) - they define tone and sustainability

Pickups - Single coil pickups (bright, twangy tone such as fender stratocasters) or Humbuckers (hum-cancelling, mellow tone such as gibson les paul, ibanez, etc)

Neck - Thin ones are fast action, most lead guitar likes it. Thick ones are suitable for rhythm guitar

Frets - the more the better! (mostly 22 frets or 24 frets)

Bridge - Fixed and Tremolo (normal or floyd rose)

yeah, i like the Ibanez GSA60 (my so-called dream guitar that's cheap). it's very versatile.
