I think the difference you might notice were you a 'capitalist' standing in a room with one of each, is that the communist would be a lot more likely to shoot you out of hand, while the socialist would just want to steal all your stuff.

The socialist and communist are one in the same in theory. Communism is the pure Utopian end dream of the socialist. By the way, none of them work as they both assume government is inherently good..if only certain elitist ( usually made up of the ones fighting for it) are in power and we all know how true that is!! The USSR imploded due to being obsessed with a it's military spending and lack of trade capital from the west. China would share the same fate if the world did not trade with them. They were close to that fate before Nixon "opened up trade" with them. North Korea and Cuba are dirt poor giving evidence to the obvious. Communism is just another form of dictatorship; they never last vary long unless fed by the capitalist countries.

Socialist believe in keeping many aspects of capitalism and always having a government. Communists see socialism as just the first step towards Communism leading to no state at all.

Under the philosophies of Karl Marx the first step in achieving true communism (egaltarianism) is socialism. There is no quick way to a socio-political system that has no monetary system.
