Well it usually takes about four years of undergrad and four years of medical school. Residency can last anywhere from three to seven years depending on what type of doctor you decide to be. If you specialize, it may take longer. Obviously, surgery is one of those medical specialties that will take a longer time than say internal medicine or pediatrics.

For a doctor: 4 years of college, 4 years of med school, and 2 years of residency.

For a specialist (i.e. a surgeon) same as above, but I think that they go to school for a couple more years to fully learn all the important concepts that they are required to know.
