Winds from the east--a "nor'easter" is a common phenomenon first documented by Ben Franklin.

It takes place on the East Coast, and is not necessarily related to hurricane activity.

I think making specific predictions about specific seasons is a mistake and weather forcasters should avoid doing that. This is a game of numbers and statistics. Odds if you will. The chances are that there will be more storms this year. Will there 100% certainly be more storms? no. Of course not. There are simply too many factors. Think of it like a poker game. You have a set of aces, You are almost certain to win the hand... but there is always a chance that someone will suck out a straight on the river and beat you. You might be a 90% favorite to win the hand but you can still lose. Does that mean you should bet on winning or losing? After all you will lose some of the time in that situation. The answer should be obvious. Bet on winning that hand. The number of times you are right will outweigh the number of times you are wrong. Simply because you lose once does not mean you should change a logically sound policy.
