September 1st 1939 when Germany under Hitler invaded Poland. Hitler's expansionist regime and his views of the superiority of the German race played a major role in the beginning of the war. Also Germany wanted revenge for world war 1.

I would suggest that World War II was really the second "hot" phase of the Second Thirty Years War (1914-1945), because it arose out of the unresolved issues of World War I.
