I have a guppy that's been trying to die for literally 4 days. I've been waiting and hoping it would just give up the ghost, but it's not. It's bent in a stiff S shape like it's been broken somehow. There are no marks on it and it's the only one in the tank like that. It lays on the bottom on it's side, it's not able to straighten out or swim...It's absolutely pathetic and I'd like to end it's misery, but I want to do it as humanely as possible. Any ideas?

As I grew up on a farm I favor blunt force trama. Remove the fish, and place it in a zip lock bag (don't zip). Wrap some paper towels around it, and place on a hard surface. Take a heavy object hit it as hard as possible. For larger fish I'd use an old towel.

Other methods-
-flushing just plain cruel.
-Cold cruel for non-carp. For carp like goldfish keep in mind you'll need freeze them solid,or kill in other way once they are out.
-Cloves hard to judge dosage.
-alcohol okay if you start it slowly.

Livebearers (guppies, mollies, swordtails) tend to develop that body curl in adulthood we see it alot in my pet store.. one cause is from extreme inter breeding... it is basically a genetic deformity that can develop even after several years of them being fine. As for the killing of it due to its suffering, the quickest most painless way... may SOUND mean but it is the quickest.. is to get the fish in a fish net... take it outside an quickly smack the net against the ground or side of the house... it sounds aweful but it really isnt if they are suffering... if you dont want to do that then the freezer.. with no water

the terrific thank you to do this could be to place a million drop of clove oil in a a million gallon bucket. it is going to humanely euthanize the fish, and it extremely is physique will nonetheless be intact! =) you may get clove oil on the drugstore. in case you may no longer get your palms on clove oil, i might purely fill up a small container with water, and a good type of ice. it extremely is slightly much less humane, yet extra valuable than flushing, and in basic terms takes a pair seconds. stable success! =)

Just leave it. Let it be natural. Don't kill it or do anything to it.
Sometimes we may feel inclined to kill off a suffering fish because it seems humane to end its suffering or because it doesn't look good for the 'aquarium image'.
However, the ethical thing to do would be to let it be.

That's strange. Get it out of the tank before whatever is affecting it hurts your other fish. There isn't a human way to kill a fish. The stress from flushing him might kill it, or you could put it in a wrag and break it's back.

Or take it out of water.

The other method I use is decapitation with an Xacto knife. Not always pleasant the first few times. I've probably done it to 50 fish, large and small and it still isn't easy, but I can do it quickly, cleanly and professionally, because they deserve it and I'm getting paid to do it.
I maintain aquaria for a living. I charge $10 to euthanize a small fish and $20 to euthanize a large one. It is my least favorite part of the job.

Most consider clove oil to be the most humane

Sorry about your fish. It has one of two possible problems and as you surmise cannot be treated for the crooked spine.

DO NOT FLUSH IT! It hits chlorinated and COLD water. So you suddenly send it into shock and burn it. Then it is tramatized by the force of the drain, swept into sewage and usually they die in the treatment plant....

The generally accepted way is to but it in a tupperware dish and freeze it. As the temp drops it slows down, then goes numb. If you hear reports of freezing to death is hurts a bit when you feel cold but then people just want to go to sleep...

YOU are doing more damaging to the fish by keeping him in the tank.Take the sick guppy out and flush him down the toilet!

Dude... seriously??? It's a guppy. How do you know he's suffering? Maybe he's just got a really bad cramp?
