I'm sure that you can find a good laptop for around $600, but be ready to spend another $400 of so on Microsoft Office because that's were Word and Excel are and Microsoft doesn't give there stuff away.

Well, you don't need word, excel, powerpoint because you can get Open Office for free, and it does all the same things.
So, you might find a good deal over at Dell.com. Check out the Inspiron laptop models.
