A friend of mine, 80 years old, doesn't plant potatoes until there is a full moon in June. He swears he gets bigger and more consistent potatoes but he can't explain why. He's done it that way years. What would be the possible connection with the moon and planting potatoes?

My Mom always planted by the moon too. She said if you plant potatoes in the wrong sign, they will grow to the top and get sunburned, if you plant pole beans in the wrong sign, they won't climb the poles. Must be something to it. That is how we were all raised, out of her garden, we would have gone hungry, had she not have known what she was doing. Better take his advice. My husband plants whenever, and has a good stand of potatoes right now. What's under the ground, we will find out later, I guess.

I don't understand why but your friend is right. There are times when you dig a hole and can't find enough dirt to fill it back up and other times you can't get all the dirt back in the hole. Same reason the stage of the moon. I have been planting and all by the moon the past couple years and there is something I can't explain to it. Times for above ground crops, pulling weeds ect...Pick up a copy of the Farmers Almanac sometime and read thru it.

There is a whole planting guide to moon phases one being don't plant in The 4th quarter, pull weeds till and harvest instead, and harvest just after full moon for more flavor. I believe it has to do with the moons gravitational force, but it has never been explained.
