Is 2-methyl-2-propanol the same as 2-methylpropan-2-ol?

Why in the second case is 2 in between "propan" and "ol"?

the second member of the propan part of the molecule has alcohol attached to it..

2-Methyl-2-propanol, although I find 2-methylpropan-2-ol in other souces.

They are the same, though you'll usually see t-butanol.
